What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers in Klamath Falls are very thin pieces of porcelain that your dentist permanently attaches to the fronts of your teeth. They’re designed to fit in perfectly with your unique smile; your dentist will be careful to choose a color and a shape for your veneers that will enable them to blend in seamlessly with the teeth around them.

Veneers are often able to fix all of the following imperfections:

  • Discoloration
  • Cracks and chips
  • Minor misalignment and small gaps
  • Teeth that are too small
  • Asymmetrical teeth

Although veneers typically go on the top teeth, they can also hide flaws on the bottom teeth. You may choose to get just one veneer to cover a particularly unattractive portion of your smile, or you can opt for a complete set of 4 – 8 veneers to achieve a total transformation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

If all of the following are true of you, it’s very possible that you are a good candidate for this procedure:

  • You have excellent oral hygiene habits
  • You are free of gum disease and other major oral health concerns
  • You have no major orthodontic problems
  • Your teeth have enough enamel to support veneers
  • You understand that dental insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures

During your consultation, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and discuss all of the potential pros and cons of veneers with you. Then, together, you and your dental professional can make a confident decision about whether this treatment is right for you.

What Is the Process Like for Getting Veneers?

cosmetic dentistry

It takes at least two appointments for your dentist to complete the veneer procedure.

During your first appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel from them. This is necessary to ensure that the veneers don’t make your smile look bulky or unnatural. Then, your dentist will take some impressions and photographs of your mouth. You’ll wear a temporary veneer while a laboratory creates your custom new look.

When you return for your second appointment, your dentist will see how your veneers fit and make any necessary final adjustments to them. Then, they’ll get attached to your teeth, and you can go off and dazzle the world with your brilliant grin!

You can expect your initial set of veneers to maintain their brilliant look for 10 – 15 years (or longer) if you care for them well. Eventually, they may begin to peel off or become discolored, so you’ll have to get them replaced.
